Poker
is one of those quintessential casino games that have come to epitomise
card across the globe. Generally believed to have a history that spans
almost a 1,000 years, poker or card games that feature hierarchical
ranking have been perennial favourites among gamblers from the Far East
to Africa for most of recorded history.
Many historians believe that poker
as we know it has its origins in 10th century China with a ranked card
game believed to have been played by the Chinese Emperor himself.
History indicates that 12th and 13th century Persia and Egypt gamblers
played similar games in As Nas and Ganjifa respectively. These games
were played with as many as 96 extremely elaborately decorated hardwood
or ivory wafers that served as cards.
Contemporary poker games are believed to have originated from the 14th
century Spanish game Primero which employed a similar 3 card, ranked
structure as is common today. All of these games shared the basic
principle of using a card or symbol ranking system to dictate play and
all employed the one facet of
poker that characterises the game best - the bluff!
Poker is a fairly simple game to learn to play and although there are
many different variations of the game the principles remain the same.
Most are played with a standard 52 card deck and generally see hands of
between 3 and 7 cards dealt to each player by a house dealer or a
designated player.
Conventional poker games as they are played in most casinos are
structured around a card ranking system that sees either groups or
numerical sequences constructed using the card hierarchy. For example a
five card hand consisting of 2, 5, 2, J, 2 would allow for a grouping
of 3 x 2 face value cards. The ranking system would then dictate that
that hand would loose to a 3 x 4's group.
These groups can include similar value cards as demonstrated above,
sequences such as 10, J, Q, K, A or suite sequences such as 5 x diamond
or spade cards. Players also usually get to discard unwanted cards and
pick up others dependant on the game being played. There are many
different versions of poker games and each may have several ways of
being played according to location.
The popular Asian
poker variety Pai Gow for instance, utilises one 5 card and
one 2 card hand and differs from conventional poker in that players
have to beat both the dealers hands using only high cards and pairs.
Other popular casino poker games are 3 and 7 card stud, draw poker, Red
Dog poker and Texas Hold 'em. Any casino offering these games will have
full sets of rules available should you have any doubts about game
specifics.
Which ever poker variety
you enjoy you
can be assured that you are continuing a very long and colourful
tradition each time you sit down to play!
